Ethics and governance

Good governance is an integral part of sustainable development. At Lafarge, governance is based on strong ethical principles.

Lafarge’s shared values

Lafarge's values are shared by all of our employees around the world. They are encapsulated in the Lafarge Way, which is founded on a set of fundamental values: integrity, commitment, courage and consideration for others.

The Lafarge Way is based on three guiding principles:

  • making our people successful: Lafarge aims to help everyone succeed,

  • focusing on performance improvement: Lafarge continually seeks to improve its products and services,

  • "multilocal" organization: Lafarge's operations are local but are closely tied to our global strategy.

Governance

Governance is the set of rules (both legislative and internal) that determine the way a company conducts its business. Governance is designed to guarantee transparency, oversight and ethics in business.

A code of business conduct

The code of business conduct sets certain standards of behavior for all employees and executives of Lafarge, as well as for suppliers of goods and services. The code is designed to build trust at all levels.

This code of conduct applies to all of Lafarge's relationships with:

  • its employees,

  • its customers,

  • its suppliers,

  • all local communities where Lafarge operates,

  • its shareholders.

A dedicated telephone line is available for employees to report any violations of this code.

Lafarge Cement WAPCO & Neighbouring Communities

Lafarge Cement WAPCO regards social responsibility as a way of life, a continuous exercise that must be sustained to maintain our excellent reputation and promote goodwill. With the Community Relations policy of maintaining relations with local communities and carrying out operations in such a way that local communities share in the benefit of the business, conscious efforts are being made on a continuous basis to intensify the company’s good deeds through various events and programmes aimed at not only fulfilling its responsibility to the society at large, but also at making its various stakeholders proud to be associated with the company.

Lafarge Cement WAPCO'S
commitment to the welfare of its community neighbours cuts across the areas of education, health, provision of social amenities and creating and sustaining a deep sense of belonging through sharing in times of need. Aside from financing tangible and physical projects, Lafarge Cement WAPCO sees as equally important, identifying with people around its plants in their times of joy and sorrow. This explains the presence of the company in, and regular contributions to, virtually all community programmes and events. Life enhancing and people development programmes like job creation and empowerment initiatives targeted at youths and the less privileged.

Our approach is to involve the communities at all stages of conception, decision - making and implementation of development projects. To this end, we have around each of our plants, a Community Development Committee comprising of well meaning and accomplished indigenes across different strata of the society whose membership is determined by the community leaders. Regular meetings are held with representatives of the neighbouring communities to deliberate upon issues of common interest to both the Company and the Communities, agree possible development projects each year, and jointly follow through on the timely and good quality implementation of the projects.

Between 2005 - 2010, the following community development projects were undertaken in communities around our Ewekoro and Sagamu Plants:

As a result of these gestures of goodwill and peaceful disposition of its host communities, Lafarge Cement WAPCO was able to foster a conducive operating environment, which aided the Company’s performance. We are committed to ensuring outstanding relationship with our neighbouring communities even in the years ahead

Preserving the environment

Quarry restoration started for Lafarge WAPCO's operations back in the 2000s. This commitment has developed over the years to encompass a broad range of initiatives to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment, preserve natural resources and reduce CO2 emissions.

Example include conversion of old quarries in Sagamu to Fish Pond ventures to assist the economic survival of the communities, Planting of trees to reclaim the land and Construction of drainage channel for free flow of water to stem any flooding in the communities.

This helps Lafarge WAPCO's operations to build sustainable growth by placing environmental commitments at the heart of day-to-day activities. Its operations provide skilled jobs and contributions to the local economy through empowerment, provision of Infrastructures, use of local sub-contractors and community partnerships.

CASE STUDY I

As part of the sustainable efforts to engender positive impacts, for the quarry opening up for the expansion project, Lakatabu, some communities directly affected like Oke- Oko Sekoni, Oke- Oko Egabado and Olapeleke were rehabilitated while channel for free flow of water was also created to militate flooding.

CASE STUDY II

In Sagamu, a major rehabilitation was carried out on the old quarry where mineral resources was taken with planting of trees to re-claim the land while other part of the quarries were converted to fish pond to serve as a commercial venture for source of living for the communities ten years ago.

In furtherance of its effort to align with group's ambition to reduce the emission level to the lowest minimum level, a major Tree Planting Campaign Plan was embarked upon in Ewekoro since 2007 to neutralize the effect of Carbon Monoxide and Carbon -dioxide on the environment. About 250 trees were planted in 2009 in different locations of the factory and the communities. As at present, about 450 trees have been planted and the effort  still continues.
